The just-released DJI Mavic Pro drone ($999) is proof. Because while it can’t make calls, we’re quite bullish on its photo-taking capabilities. Also, it flies.

First thing you’ll notice is that this is compact. Its propeller-clad legs fold underneath the body, making the entire package about the size of a bottle of water. So it scores some serious points for portability. The remote has a 4.3-mile transmission range, so go ahead and do some exploring in the next town over. It’ll fly up to 40 miles per hour, and the battery will keep this thing in the air for 27 minutes, allowing you to capture plenty of footage. It’s even got sensors to avoid any obstacles, and the flight tech means you can hover steadily or fly at a uniform height above uneven ground. We know pilots who can’t even do that.
So get out there. See the world. Immortalize it in video. And look for opportunities to say phrases like, “That’s a nice selfie stick, but I find that miniature drones are better at capturing Niagara’s true essence.” People always get a kick out of that sort of thing.
